![]() ![]() The first impressions were great but there was something not quite right on the food and beverage side of the business that was letting it down. I know there is a staff shortage in the US which is a challenge. This hotel could be so much better than it is. This area was used for breakfast but despite there being multiple possible access points to this area we only managed to find the way in on our third attempt. Surely you would attract more custom if other guests could see diners tucking into good food and they were sat near the attractive fish pond and waterfall. The evening diners were tucked away at the back of the dining area. There is not much more I could say about it. She was talking to them leaning on their table chewing gum!! That totally put me off. What finally made me decide that we would not be eating in the Hotel that night was when this lady was taking an order from another couple sat in the bar. As she turned to me I realised that she was actually chatting on WhatsApp!! The longer I remained in the bar the more it became apparent that her conversation on WhatsApp was more important to her than the customers she was being paid to serve. ![]() Her back was turned to me and I thought she must be doing some billing for another customer. I have to say that any compassion I had for the lady was lost when I walked over to the bar to ask for another drink. It appeared that the hotel was very short of staff as I could only see one other person apart from the receptionist in the building and it looked like their job was to bring the food out. By this time I was feeling quite sorry for the lady. I too waited upon finishing my drink to see if she would come over and offer me another one. The 2 men on the table next to me were waiting a long time for the lady to ask them if they wanted their drinks refilled. I watched as one man who had clearly done a long days work gave up waiting for a drink and seat in the restaurant as the lady was taking a long time to see to other guests. It quickly became clear that she was not managing to do any of these with success. She also had to seat guests asking for a table in the restaurant. It appeared that her job was to provide drinks and take food orders from guests at the bar as well as drinks orders and drink service in the restaurant. Rather than being staff in a hotel she looked like she had just popped in on her way home from doing the weekly family grocery shop. Underneath was a t-shirt of some sort and ski pants. She wore a grey hoody with fur around the collar. Initially I wasn't sure if she was staff. I went to the bar where the lady behind the bar served me. While my wife settled in our room I went off to explore. She was an absolute star!! Our bed was super comfortable and everything was clean and tidy. She checked us in quickly and we had the most lovely room. We were greeted on the evening of 19th October by the most lovely receptionist who was friendly, welcoming and helpful. We actually extended our stay a night - a Saturday night, mind you - and they were kind enough to give us the rate we had procured on Trivago. ![]() ![]() There are pleasant surprises, such as the hot cocoa/coffee/tea bar in the lobby, the wood fire, the tree-filled dining area draped in twinkling lights, the plush moose hiding in every room and available for a nominal fee to support a local children's charity, and a small gift shop. Were the staff helpful? Very helpful, friendly, competent. Was the breakfast buffet satisfactory? Very much so. Could they use defoamer in the whirlpool? Yep. Could a few dollars here and there spruce it up? Sure. Once I read the more recent reviews I was a bit concerned. We picked this a few days before a spontaneous trip to Vermont - I didn't want to stay anywhere with a numeral in its name, which my husband wanted, so we compromised with this. Not sure why there is such a spate of one-star reviews for 2022. ![]()
